Electric vs Gas Dryer Rental: What to Choose

One of the first questions when renting a dryer is whether you need electric or gas. The answer depends on what's already in your home. Here's a simple guide to help you choose the right dryer type for your DFW rental.

Check Your Hookups First

Look behind where your dryer goes. An electric dryer uses a large 240-volt outlet (bigger than a standard plug, usually with 3 or 4 prongs). A gas dryer connects to a gas line (a metal pipe with a shut-off valve) and uses a standard 120-volt outlet. Your hookup type determines which dryer you need.

Electric Dryers

Electric dryers are the most common in DFW apartments and newer homes. They're easy to install—just plug in and go. They tend to cost slightly less upfront and don't require gas line inspection. Most of our rental inventory is electric, ensuring quick availability.

Gas Dryers

Gas dryers use natural gas to generate heat, which typically dries clothes faster and at a lower operating cost. They're common in older DFW homes and some newer constructions. Installation requires a proper gas connection, which our team handles safely during setup.

FAQs

How do I know if I have electric or gas dryer hookups?

Look for a large 240V outlet (3 or 4 prong) for electric, or a gas pipe with a shut-off valve for gas. If unsure, send us a photo of your hookup area and we'll identify it for you.

Is a gas dryer cheaper to run than electric?

Generally yes—natural gas costs less than electricity per BTU in most of Texas, so gas dryers typically have lower operating costs. However, the difference is usually modest ($15-$20/month).

Can I switch from electric to gas (or vice versa)?

This requires different hookups and may need an electrician or plumber. We recommend matching your existing hookup type. If you're unsure, we'll help you figure it out before delivery.
